About
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more or maybe you have a creative project.
Friends of the Sky is a nonprofit artist foundation formed to preserve the work and vison of the American minimalist sculptor and writer, Tal Streeter. The Streeter Collection consists of a selection of works and writings from his life work that are housed in the Foundation compound.
The building was completed in 2018, and we now have a 2500 sq ft compound that includes a two story library, housing 3200 books, an art studio, and a residence for visiting artists.
We have created a very quiet, restrained atmosphere for artists and writers, set in a forested area in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range on Old Santa Fe Trail, just 10 minutes from the downtown Plaza. Reading and working in the library or studio offers a complete view of the courtyard, through a 35’ glass curtain wall, surrounded by a shallow arroyo filled with pinon and juniper
The second floor mezzanine in the library offers the most exceptional view over the trees – the mountain range, featuring Sun Mountain, only a mile away.
The building is warmed with radiant heat throughout and air conditioning for all 3 zones.
The architecture and construction of the compound is in a minimalist style, with very clean lines in several shades of cool grey. The library features a 30 foot wide book case with a continuous 20 ft high. The upper half of the bookcase is served by a full length mezzanine, with glass balustrade, including the stairs. This mezzanine opens into a set of cantilevered glass enclosed exterior stairways to a viewing deck for sunsets and that allows an unlimited vista of the surrounding mountains and Santa Fe.
Entrance to the art studio is from a protected exterior work area in the back or through a door set into the bookcase.
The residence has a kitchen with all appliances, as well as enclosed washer/dryer. The bathroom has double sinks and a separate toilet. All power is provided by solar panels on the roof of a nearby building
The east and north sides, as well as all of the roof is clad with steel and glass. The building is heavily insulated All rainwater is harvested to a 1000 gallon tank hidden in the back, and all power provided by solar panels on the roof of a nearby building. It is situated on our forested land on the east side of Santa Fe.
We have created a very quiet, private building for work, rest, and contemplation.
